Service Projects

“Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”  -Martin Luther King, Jr.

Service is one of the four KDP ideals, and chapters are highly encouraged to incorporate service into their chapter programming. Anyone can read and become book-smart in a subject, but great teachers are not born after reading a book. Great teachers are created through knowledge and experience, and the only way to gain experience is to get out in the community. KDP encourages all chapters to incorporate service in their programming, so that teachers develop a better understanding of people and the lives they live outside of the classroom.

KDP chapters submitted the fundraising ideas below. All the ideas are organized by level of difficulty. If your chapter has a great fundraising program that you would like to share, please click here and submit your idea. Thank you.

Through Book Drives for Better Lives, chapters can conduct a fund-raiser and service project that is free, easy, and fun! Select one of Better World Books’ nonprofit literacy partners and BOTH the partner and your chapter earn money for the collected books.

Your chapter chooses which of the following partners will benefit from your drive: Books for Africa, Room to Read, WorldfundNational Center for Family LiteracyInvisible Children, or Plan USA in Haiti, the newest BWB partner. You can even support Kappa Delta Pi’s Literacy Alive!

If Kappa Delta Pi collects more than 5,000 accepted books nationwide by June 30, 2010, Better World Books will award $1,500 for Literacy Alive grants to support even more of your local literacy projects!
