| What is the college’s investment to start a chapter? |
| Qualifying institutions pay a one-time, nonrefundable
chartering fee of $500 (U.S. dollars). This fee covers expenses
of the charter, initial chapter resources, and travel costs
incurred by the Executive Council member conducting the installation. |
How long does it take to start a chapter? |
| The entire chartering process usually takes about 3–6
months, depending on the readiness of the institution. Leaders
of the new group (faculty counselor, students, and student
leaders/officers) work directly with a Regional Chapter Coordinator
(RCC) to complete the process according to your schedule.
To become an official chapter of Kappa Delta Pi and gain
full rights and benefits for members, new groups must complete
all phases of the chapter building and installation process.

| Who serves
as the chapter advisor? |
| Kappa Delta Pi uses the term
Chapter Counselor when referring to a chapter advisor. Chapter
counselors who will serve in this role usually are appointed
by the head of the education program. They also may be recruited
by students or volunteer for the position, especially if they
have been involved previously with Kappa Delta Pi. Chapter
counselors are faculty or staff members who want to work closely
with the student leaders to ensure that the chapter is successful.
Education program administrators are asked to give careful
consideration to the appointment of a chapter counselor. This
decision is one of the most crucial steps of the new chapter
process and determines the strength and long-term success of
the chapter. The chapter counselor is required to be active
member of Kappa Delta Pi and may be initiated at the time of
installation. Chapters may have co-counselors to share the
work of supporting the chapter. |
| Can each
individual campus charter a chapter? |
| Yes. When a university has
more than one campus, each campus is eligible to charter a
Kappa Delta Pi chapter. Most multi-campus colleges have multiple
chapters. |
| Are 2-year
and online institutions eligible to charter chapters? |
| Any regionally or nationally
accredited institution that offers an education major is eligible
to have a Kappa Delta Pi chapter on its campus. |
| How much
does a student have to invest to become a member? |
Members of Kappa Delta Pi pay
an annual membership fee of $39 for national dues in addition
to local dues, which are set by the chapter to cover its operational
expenses. Additionally, some chapters charge a one-time initiation
fee to off-set the costs of a banquet or other honors program
chosen as part of installation.
Chapter attendance is not required
to receive national benefits. Your chapter may have a participant
program that encourages chapter involvement, however, so check
with your chapter counselor or membership chair for more details. |
| How many
people are needed to start a chapter? |
| No minimum number of students
is needed to submit the initial application for approval of
a new chapter. During the building process, however, the chapter
is encouraged to invite all eligible students into membership,
which is the top 20% of the education program. KDP and your
RCC expect the chapter to initiate at least 50% of the eligible
students as charter members. For long-term sustainability,
the chapter should strive to have at least 30–50 members after
the first year. |
