Volunteering helps others and gives back to you. By serving in one or more of the diverse opportunities available through KDP, you contribute to your Society and add valuable experience to your professional portfolio. The ways to get involved in KDP abound and appeal to the diverse interests, expertise, and skills of members. Whether you seek positions that enhance your leadership skills, enable you to support chapters or the Society, allow you to mentor newer educators, or provide credits for academic reviews, we will help you find the right volunteer opportunity.
Acceptance Criteria  

Each volunteer opportunity has its own specific responsibilities and requirements. However, the following two criteria apply to all volunteer positions:

 

Active member status; and

Ability to commit the necessary time to fulfill the requirements of the specific volunteer activity.

Executive Council

The Executive Council, elected by the membership, represents the interests of all KDP members, ensuring viability of the Society, bearing fiduciary responsibility, and developing the strategic vision for Kappa Delta Pi. The President of the Society works in tandem with the Executive Director to see that strategic goals are realized through the efforts of KDP staff members and volunteer leaders.

Nomination forms and application forms for serving on the Executive Council are posted on the KDP Web site in November of the second year of the biennium. Additionally, at Convocation members have access to information about serving on the Executive Council. For questions not addressed online, please e-mail membership@kdp.org.

Centennial Celebration Committee
The Society celebrates its 100th anniversary during the 2010–2011 biennium, which culminates with Convocation 2011, Crossroads to Excellence. Various events throughout the biennium include activities for all members. KDP seeks members interested in assisting with the planning events, participating in various activities, and contributing memorabilia or stories.

Volunteers are needed at the chapter, regional, and national levels. Serving on sub-committees allows members a host of ways to get involved in the celebration of KDP’s rich legacy and future vision. Convo09 Committee
The National Planning Committee assists Headquarters staff members in selecting speakers, developing the conference structure, choosing an appropriate theme and corresponding workshop strands, as well as review workshop proposals. Chapter Services Committee

Chapter Officer
Officers lead and coordinate local chapter activities including induction, governance, programming, finance, fund-raising, and community service projects.

Chapter Committee Member
The committee member serves with other committee members, officers, and the chapter as a whole to carry out various activities that include induction, publicity, service projects, programs, fund-raising, and member recruitment and retention efforts.

Graduate Student National Committee

In response to the increasing number of master and doctoral graduate students being inducted into the Society, Kappa Delta Pi formed the Graduate Student Committee in November 2005. Members of this committee develop new resources to address the needs of graduate students and serve as an advisory group for HQ staff in matters pertaining to graduate student members. Members serve a one- or two-year term.

Committee Goals

Identify and build online resources for KDP’s graduate student members, both master and doctoral.

Recommend Convocation sessions for graduate students and participate in those sessions, if possible.

Assist Headquarters (HQ) staff in establishing an online community for graduate students.

Make recommendations to the graduate student representative on the Executive Committee.

Kappa Delta Pi Educational Foundation

The Educational Foundation supports the scholarships, grants, and professional development programs of the Society. Members can review any of more than 50 different scholarships and grants for the Educational Foundation. Reviewers are given rubrics for scoring and will have no more than 20 applications to evaluate.

Scholarship Reviewers consider applications for the 30 different scholarships offered by the KDP Educational Foundation. Reviewers are assigned scholarship applications based on areas of expertise, work in teams of two or three, and are given instructions prior to receiving applications. Approximately one week following the late-April application deadline, reviewers receive electronic versions of the scholarship applications they are chosen to review. Reviewers have one month to complete reviews using the scoring rubric provided. Up to 60 reviewers are needed.

Classroom Teacher Grant Reviewers consider grant proposals for classroom projects and supplies submitted by practicing teacher members. Reviewers work in teams of two and are given instructions prior to receiving proposals. Approximately one week following the December 1 proposal deadline, reviewers receive electronic versions of the proposals they are selected to review. Reviewers then have one month to complete reviews using the scoring rubric provided. (If you plan to submit a Classroom Teacher Grant proposal, please do not volunteer for this position.) Up to 8 reviewers are needed.

Members interested in reviewing scholarships and grant applications for the Educational Foundation should e-mail foundation@kdp.org. Opportunities exist year-round: classroom teacher grant reviewers are needed in December and scholarship reviewers in April.

Journal Reviewers

Members may review manuscripts for one of the Society’s three quarterly publications. To learn more about the journals and the role of reviewer, please link to the journal of your choice.

Web Site Committee

KDP’s Web site and online resources allow the Society to provide service to its members 24 hours a day, every day. To meet the changing needs of educators, the Web site committee provides, recommends, and reviews online resources and site functionality.
