ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Following the KDP Convocation lunch on Saturday, conference attendees will have a selection of opportunities available to extend their professional development and to experience Indianapolis.

The National Wounded Student™ Certificate Program
Kappa Delta Pi conference attendees are eligible to register at a discounted rate for the National Wounded Student™ Certificate Program, which is part of the Simon Youth Foundation’s Annual Educator Conference. The National Wounded Student Certificate Program is designed to give participants the latest research, tools, assessments, references, and practical ideas for understanding the effects of trauma on learning and behavior, as well as for working with wounded youth in your organizational setting (e.g., school, team, youth organization/club, church, foster care system). Participants will be guided through an original model developed by Dr. Joe Hendershott for understanding, reaching, and positioning wounded children to experience transformation in their lives. This course, which includes a workshop manual, is based on Dr. Hendershott’s two books: 7 Ways to Transform the Lives of Wounded Students and Reaching the Wounded Student.

Date: Saturday and Sunday, November 3–4, 2018
Time: Immediate following Convocation lunch through Sunday, 1:00 p.m.
Location: Omni Hotel (a short walk from the Hyatt)
Cost: Certification Course (16 hours): $250
CEU Certification: $175 (CEUs are certified through Mount Vernon Nazarene University, Ohio.)
Project Learning Tree Workshop
Looking for some fresh ideas to meet your teaching challenges and get students outside? Project Learning Tree offers an opportunity that integrates environmental science concepts across the curriculum. Participants in the workshop will gain the knowledge and ability to apply what they learn to their own curriculum. Project Learning Tree (PLT) is widely recognized as one of the premier environmental education programs in the world. Through hands-on, interdisciplinary activities, PLT helps young people learn how to think, not what to think, about complex environmental issues. Developed to meet state and national standards, PLT provides the tools educators need to bring the environment into their classrooms and their students into the environment. This workshop, which includes a workbook, is worth 6 Professional Growth Points, which are certified through the Indiana Department of Education. There are 20 spots available.

        Date: Saturday, November 3, 2018
        Time: 2:00–5:00 p.m.
        Location: Hyatt Regency
        Cost: $25 per person
Teaching Difficult Topics

Participants will be immersed in discussions, tools, and approaches that will enable them to deepen their students’ understanding of content that may be emotional, controversial, or uncomfortable. This workshop includes a visit to the Power of Children’s Exhibit at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. Educators will leave this workshop with resources to address topics such as civil rights and the Holocaust. Participants will receive 3 contact hours to apply toward CEU credits. KDP will provide transportation to and from the museum. There are only 25 spots available for this opportunity.
