Kappa Delta Pi is growing internationally! KDP Takes Global Step Start an International Chapter

UN Update and Representative Opportunity
Since January 11, 2010, Kappa Delta Pi has been affiliated with the United Nations (UN) as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). In this capacity, KDP participates in weekly UN briefings as the NGO designated for education, givingthe KDP community greater opportunities to raise awareness and collaborate for global learning.

Representing KDP at the UN since that time are Dr. Kathryn De Lawter and Dr. Margaret Vallone Gardineer, who have served on the Committee on Teaching About the UN (CTAUN). Ms. Christina Ferrari, an active member of the executive council of the Mu Sigma Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi at Manhattan College in Riverdale, New York, joined them in the fall of 2011 as the first KDP UN NGO Student Representative to the United Nations.  KDP now seeks a second Student Representative. If you are interested, please contact Faye Snodgress via email, faye@kdp.org, or by phone, 800.284.3167.

KDP’s second year as an NGO produced these activities:
  • Co-sponsorship with CTAUN of “It’s Our World: Lessons for Peace and Reconciliation,” a conference for teacher educators, students, and teachers on November 6, 2010 at Shortridge Magnet High School for Law and Public Policy in Indianapolis, Indiana.
  • Representation at and participation in weekly UN briefings on topics and concerns across the globe.
  • Presence and work at the CTAUN UN Conference, “Achieving the Millennium Development Goals: Teaching for Action, on 14 January 2011 at the United Nations building in New York City.
  • Continued collaboration and leadership within CTAUN to plan initiatives that support global learning.
  • Networking at the UN to further KDP connections and presence in the global community.
  • Gathering digital and other resources to promote the improvement of educational linkages and opportunities within and beyond KDP.
These UN briefings have a profound impact on how we think about the world, how we teach and the choices we make. We hope that you will look to the UN as a resource. Most importantly, we urge you to get to know the NGOs working in your communities for it is through collaborative efforts that we can make change.

As a part of KDP’s International Initiative, we intend to facilitate making the UN an invaluable resource. We welcome any queries you may have. We will do our best to answer them. You may reach us at kdelawter@pace.edu and mgardineer@verizon.net.
