Happy Birthday!

Did you know that Kappa Delta Pi celebrated its 94th birthday on March 11? Though Headquarters staff members recognized the event by looking back on the Society’s inception, I suspect that few of you realized that your honor society is another year older. Our founders would be so proud to realize that the promises and ideals that marked the inauguration of the Society are still in place. How members practice these fundamentals changes with the times to shape a membership experience vastly different than it was in 1911.

Please read through this issue of your membership newsletter, The Kadelpian, to see what KDP offers you today. A few items you might want to check out include:

Money-saving benefits
Ninety-nine-year-old retired teacher renews her membership
Orlando is a great place for Convo
Community colleges connect with KDP
Summer reading recommendations
Gifts keep on giving
Alumni Chapters important to KDP members

I want your membership in and affiliation with KDP to have value and meaning. That’s why Headquarters staff members and I continually seek to better our services. If you have ideas that you’d like to share with us about these services, be sure to submit them through Question of the Quarter in this issue.

KDP Connects with Community Colleges

An increasing trend across the nation has recent high school graduates and career-transitioners beginning their college course work at community colleges. Some community colleges now offer the initial courses required for teacher certification, framing a feeder program to four-year institutions. Seizing the opportunity to provide an honor society experience for students and faculty at these institutions, KDP launched and approved charter chapters at Camden and Broward community colleges. Can student chapters and local alumni chapters work together to build membership and serve the community? “Yes!” according to the KDP collegiate chapter at the University of Texas at El Paso (Epsilon Lambda) and the Paso del Norte Alumni Chapter. Read about their successful collaboration.

Oldest Living Kadelpian!

You’re never too old to be a member of Kappa Delta Pi, and Gladyce Reichard Souers proves it. At age 99, she renewed her Society membership that began in November 1951 at Kent State University. Though she retired from teaching 34 years ago, Gladyce still champions education.

“Education is important in life,” she said during a phone interview. “You use it.”

Gladyce taught third grade through most of her career, 27 of those years at Louisville (Ohio) City Schools, and the rest at North Canton School District. Having been retired almost as long as she taught, Gladyce looks back on teaching as the best part of her life. Now living in a nursing home, the retiree celebrated her 100th birthday on February 1, enthused and outspoken about education and students, but less sure on the secret of her longevity except to say that she never drank or smoked.

When asked what advice she would give to teachers just entering the profession she replied, “Tell students what you expect from the first day of school and take it from there. Be firm in rules.” She believed in being nice to all the students she encountered and hoped they would return the kindness. However, she wasn’t afraid to say no. “When you said no, it meant no. It’s not that way anymore,” she said, referring to how schools have changed since her teaching days. “It would be if I were there . . . and then I wouldn’t have a job!” she said with spitfire and determination.
