Make the Convo Connection
What makes the KDP Convocation unique? Sure, Convo’s a terrific professional development conference packed full of workshops and general sessions on educational issues and practices. But that’s not it.

What makes Convo unique is the people who come together for this event and the connections you can make. You’ll find people from every aspect of education—from education students who will be in the classroom soon, to professors who teach at the nation’s finest teaching colleges, to nationally renowned speakers on hot topics in education, to educators who have earned the distinction of being a Laureate of Kappa Delta Pi. The best part is that not only will you have the opportunity to hear them speak, but also to talk with them one-on-one about your questions and concerns.

In short, Convo is people sharing ideas with one another. Convo brings together people with one goal in mind: to improve teaching practices and challenge the thinking about education. So, what are you waiting for? Register for Convo ’07 today. It’s a great way to network and connect! You’ll find an online registration form, as well as complete information about the conference, at www.kdp.org/conference/convo.php. See y’all in Louisville, November 1–3, 2007.

Every Kadelpian has a personal story to tell about what Kappa Delta Pi and the relationships that have been established through membership mean. It is the small, but special moments we experience as active members that come together to make Kappa Delta Pi so important to each of us. The pride we feel in conducting a successful initiation or sponsoring a thought-provoking speaker, the care we exhibit in providing learning activities and books to children, and the excitement and energy generated by attending Convo collectively shape our individual experiences as members of this prestigious organization.

The strengths of these bonds are illustrated through examples from my local chapter—Mu Sigma at Manhattan College in New York—and through your chapter as well. This academic year, my chapter established a grant to honor our former counselor, Dr. Judith F. Evans and sponsored an all-day event to bring alumni to campus for workshops and conversations. Dr. Evans, as well as undergraduate students and alumni who are now teachers are making plans to attend and participate in Convo. My local Kadelpians have said that building relationships through conversations across generations are valuable opportunities that KDP has allowed them to pursue. I encourage each of you to reach out to your alumni and current membership. We are strengthened by the relationships we build.

Fortner Retires
“It was a true pleasure to have such a wonderful professor and Kappa Delta Pi advisor,” said chapter treasurer Sara O’Neal. “Dr. Fortner always encouraged and modeled the ideals: So to teach, so to serve, so to learn, both in her classes and at Kappa Delta Pi affairs.”

While serving as Counselor to the KDP chapter at Penn State Harrisburg, Dr. Fortner coordinated the Elementary Education Department and the Graduate Reading Program. As a professor and advisor, she was a role model to students.

“Through her class, Dr. Fortner showed me how to think critically and to see both sides of any story. These are tools that I use every day as an elementary teacher,” commented Audra Myers, now a fourth-grade teacher.

Dr. Mary Napoli, an assistant professor of education and reading now serving as Counselor of the Sigma Alpha Pi Chapter, said that Dr. Fortner’s “positive and caring dispositions are missed, but her spirit continues to shape and influence the chapter.”

Dr. Betty Fortner, who retired recently from Penn State Harrisburg, was honored by the Sigma Alpha Pi Chapter for her years of dedication and service to the organization since 1990. At a special dinner, student officers presented Dr. Fortner with a plaque honoring her commitment to students and the ideals of Kappa Delta Pi.

Teacher Educators Collaborate at Conference
Kappa Delta Pi members were numerous at the February meeting of the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE) in San Diego. The two organizations share some common purposes, and this annual conference provides an opportunity for collaboration. During the meeting, KDP hosted an informational breakfast at which KDP Executive Director Pamela Buckley and Executive Council Vice President Kathy A. Brown shared information about the organization.

At the ATE conference awards banquet, Morgan Simpson, Chair of the KDP Educational Foundation, presented the National Student Teacher/Intern of the Year Award to Maria Carandas, a recent graduate of the University of Houston. Carandas’s selection for this award was based on her academic résumé, classroom management skills, lesson plans, teaching portfolio and, ultimately, her promise to succeed as an educator. She now teaches second grade at Kolter Elementary School in Houston. This annual award is sponsored jointly by Kappa Delta Pi and Association of Teacher Educators.

The Epsilon Omega Chapter calendar has been heavily booked. Chapter members have been involved in an assortment of service projects, locally and internationally. They sent Christmas cards to those serving in Iraq and Afghanistan and to residents at a local nursing home; donated cans of food to the Salvation Army for the holidays; and gave food baskets and gifts to members of five families through a local Catholic Charities Kinship Support program. They also raised funds for the American Cancer Society through Daffodil Days and hosted two Scholastic Book Fairs and a résumé workshop. On a regular basis, members tutor at the YMCA and will participate in RIF Week.
North Central Indiana Professional Chapter

The professional chapter in the north central Indiana region is being revitalized. A group of beginning teachers and committed KDP members began planning events in September. The other speaker, Joy Seybold, shared strategies for preparing an Indiana licensing portfolio.
