Institution: University of Houston, TX
Theme: Fun with Eric Carle (grades K–2) and Wild about Reading (grades 3–5)

Fun with Eric Carle
Chapter members conducted three days of reading and crafting around Eric Carle books for K–2 students at an after-school program.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar— students made caterpillars and caterpillar food. After they were finished creating their crafts, they acted out the story.
The Very Clumsy Click Beetle—students worked together to create a book entitled Look What I Can Do. The students then were asked to create their own book of three things they could do.
The Grouchy Ladybug—students created ladybugs using paper plates.

Wild about Reading
Chapter members conducted three days of reading and crafting around Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak for students in grades 3–5 at an after-school program.
Students read the book and were divided into groups. Each group created their own ‘wild thing’ out of Styrofoam cones and craft supplies, completed a sheet about their ‘wild thing’, and presented their creation to the other groups.
The group took pictures from the story and put them in proper sequence. Each group wrote captions for thought bubbles on the pictures (rewriting the story) and acted out their ‘wild things’ thoughts. Masks were created.
Each group of students used their masks while presenting their revised story to the other groups.
