Chapter: 31

Institution: Southeast Missouri State University
Theme: Oh, the Places You’ll Go!

Kindergarten students toured different places on campus, such as the university library, the President’s office, the campus museum, and a dormitory room. They met the President, some campus athletes, and the school’s mascot, Rowdy Redhawk.
After the tour, the children went to learning stations set up by KDP members. These stations showed students different occupations they could have with a college degree.
Miss Nelson is Missing—included a discussion about what a good teacher is and what is required to become a teacher.
The Art Teacher—children created a mural using different art materials.
Community members, such as an emergency room nurse and a local police officer, discussed their occupations.
Farmer station—children planted their own wheat seeds and played with different farm toys.
University Library—children picked out a book to keep.
Books, which were gathered through a chapter book drive and purchased with RIF funds, were given to the participants. Each book had a book plate with the KDP RIF logo and the name and date of the project. KDP members also gathered campus souvenirs for the children, such as bookmarks, pencils, pens, Redhawk pennants, and SEMO T-shirts. These items and the children’s new books were put in goody bags and given to them as they left.
The project’s success was measured through the children’s writing. Before and after the event, the children were asked to write what they knew about college.
