Updated Annual Report: It’s had a facelift! The report is now divided into two parts—One section contains financials and dues, and the other represents officers and activities. Each part has different due dates. Financials are due August 1 as usual, while the Officer and Activities section is due September 1. Look for both parts of the updated Annual Report on the Web sometime in March.

New Tax Requirements for Chapters this year: What the IRS says: “We will begin sending letters to small organizations explaining this new filing requirement … we are asking you to notify your subordinates about the e-Postcard filing requirement. Please direct your subordinates to our website, www.irs.gov/eo for more information.” This requirement will affect your 2007–2008 Annual Report. Look for the IRS link on the KDP Web site for your information. The site contains information about the e-Postcard filing requirements.

Chapter Leadership e-Training: We are pleased to announce the first in a series of chapter leadership trainings to be offered throughout the year. The first module will give an overview of the responsibilities required for officer positions and committees. This is a good opportunity for new Counselors, new officers, and members who are considering serving as officers to learn more about KDP and chapter management. Check with your Regional Consultant for the exact dates the training will be scheduled for your area.

New Initiate Forms and Cover Sheets: Take a look at the updated Initiate Forms and accompanying cover sheet, now available through the online KDP store. There’s a new membership option—members now can choose a two-year rate! The old forms may still be used through the end of the year, but will not allow members to choose a two-year membership.

Is your chapter ready to go for an ACE? Sign up now to reserve your spot. Please email karens@kdp.org with your name, e-mail, and phone number. Registration deadline: March 7. Coming in April: a discussion with the Ace of the ACE Chapter for 2005-2007, East Tennessee State University.

Important Web Portal Update: Have you heard the buzz about the upcoming Member Web Portal? We’re excited at HQ because this portal will create a simple connection between the KDP Web site and the information in the member database. Though it was projected to be set up in January and ready for to be used for spring initiations, the launch date has been extended to late spring due to the need for additional testing to ensure the best programming. You will be kept in the loop and notified when it’s time to schedule webinars and virtual training sessions. Printed instructions and manuals, especially for the initiation process will also be available. All chapters will continue to use the paper process for initiations for the remainder of this academic year. Direct any questions you have about the Member Web Portal to Kelly Skinner, Director of Membership at kellys@kdp.org.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve: Thank you for the many times you have given me the opportunity to serve you over the past 3 years. As of February 26, I will no longer be employed with Kappa Delta Pi. I will miss those I have come to know personally over the years, as well as those I looked forward to getting to know better. Continue making Kappa Delta Pi the great organization it is. I look forward to hearing great things from all of you. Good bye and God Bless, Francie Dottin, Executive Assistant to Chapter Services until February 26.

Keep Learning, Teaching, and Loving

Leadership Training, Best Practices, Networking: Attention midwesterners, a Leadership Training Summit is scheduled for Saturday, March 29th, at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. This free KDP Event is for current and transitioning Officers. For more information, please contact tiffany@kdp.org.

Initiation Requirements: Remember these key points as you plan your member initiations:
Each chapter must pre-qualify all applicants before inviting them to membership.
Membership qualifications must follow the last Headquarter-approved bylaws on file. For more information on your bylaws, please contact your Chapter Resource Consultant.
Do not induct an applicant who has not paid the required membership dues.
Chapters must collect international dues of $38, chapter dues (if applicable), and any other optional one-time-only initiation fee.
Chapters must order original application forms through www.kdpstore.org and ensure that each applicant completes them before the ceremony.
One copy of the original forms, with KDP issued cover letter, and one check covering all initiates’ international dues must be sent to HQ within 2 weeks following the induction ceremony.

Initiation Preparation:
Be friendly. Remember that the invitation letter or card should be warm and inviting. Don’t make potential Kadelpians feel that you are doing them a favor by inviting them to membership.
Be time conscious. Set a deadline a few days before initiation for applicants to meet with a chapter official to pay membership dues and complete the original membership application. This deadline gives the chapter’s Secretary time to complete the program.
Be ready. Order induction and membership materials one-to-two weeks in advance.
Be responsible. Only induct those applicants who have paid their dues.
Be financially prepared. Deposit all checks into the chapter’s account immediately, and write one check that covers all of the initiates’ international membership dues.
Be flexible. Inevitably an emergency may prevent a small number of applicants from attending. Allow a make-up time for those few individuals to meet with a chapter official to pay membership dues and recite the rituals. Add their information to the rest and send it to HQ within 2 weeks.

Initiation Enrichment:
Order KDP merchandise and sell it at a slight mark-up following the induction ceremony. Offering the option to buy KDP items encourages membership pride and creates a small, ongoing fund-raiser as well.
Allow the Foundation Representative to highlight scholarships and grants offered by KDP.
Give time for the Historian to convey the history of the Society and your chapter.
Let the Membership Chair draw attention to the various benefits of KDP.
Have the Vice President discuss upcoming programs.
Invite and induct educators and administrators from the community.
Invite and induct faculty and staff of the School of Education.Often this action serves as thank you from the chapter to the guest speaker.

Kappa Delta Pi is growing new chapters: We had one new Collegiate Chapter installed in February at Dalton State College (2/17) Elizabeth Chadwick-Counselor, email-echadwick@daltonstate.edu. We are looking forward to two installations in March, four in April, and one, so far, in May. Four more are in the application process. Be sure and watch for the names and emails addresses of the new chapters in the next Leader. Don’t forget, if you are in one of these new chapter’s areas, send them a “welcome” email. I’m sure they would appreciate it.

Chapters celebrating their anniversaries in February and March:
50 Years — Theta Phi (213)-Catawba College, Salisbury, NC, February 28, 1958
50 Years — Theta Chi (214)-Mississippi State University, Mississippi State, MS, March 10, 1958
Congratulations on a long and productive relationship with Kappa Delta Pi!

Counselor Transition: When a professor retires, goes on sabbatical, or decides to transition leadership to another professor, it is important for either the outgoing or incoming counselorto notify the KDP Chapter Resource Consultant as soon as possible. This notification is imperative in case of unresolved administrative or financial issues, which potentially can jeopardize the chapter’s status, especially when KDP Consultants become unable make contact with the chapter’s counselor. Additionionally, KDP wants to ensure that all new counselors are fully supported and have a strong understanding of international standards and initiatives. Therefore, each new counselor should participate in a New Counselor Orientation within 30 days of taking over the chapter. If your chapter has recently experienced a change in leadership or if you have not yet scheduled an NCO, please contact your Chapter Resource Consultant at 1-800-284-3167 or mcs@kdp.org.

New Officer Notification: Kappa Delta Pi would like to take this time to thank all outgoing and incoming officers for serving the Society. Many chapters will have elections this semester. As with Counselors, it is important that HQ is updated each time officers change. With changes coming in reporting requirements, certain officers will be responsible for completing and returning those reports on time. Do you have new officers? Please update us: www.kdp.org/services/officer_change_form.php.

New Resource: Have you seen it? Check out “The Cycle of a Successful Chapter” at The Counselor’s Corner

Web sites: Do you have a chapter Web site to promote your great chapter and its activities? It’s a great way to highlight all that you do! Just be sure to keep it updated. There’s nothing worse than checking a site only to find information from 1999 still posted. Please check your site and, if it’s full of old info, either update or add a Coming Soon banner about new items. Also, if Web site isn’t linked to the national site, don’t forget to do so. Send your CRC your current url, so that she can have the KDP Web Wonder link your site under the Chapter Directory. See whether your chapter is linked!
