Cover Letters

Your cover letter introduces you to a potential employer. Address your letter to a specific person whenever possible. If a job post lists a title without a name, do a little research on the district Web site to find a name. If a name is not available, use the title in the greeting line.

Your cover letter should succinctly describe you and the expertise you can bring to the position. Be sure to address specifically the requirements of the position and the expectations of the employer. Be sure to respond to each item included in the job posting.

Write optimistically and to the point. Double-check your spelling and be sure to include complete and current contact information.

As a general rule, keep your cover letters to one page, with approximately three paragraphs. Include this information in your cover letter:

ABCs of Job Hunting
the position for which you are applying;
how you discovered the job opening;
your certification and/or anticipated graduation;
information unique to the school or district to which you are applying; and
résumé highlights that show special skills or experiences that may set you
apart from other applicants and specifically address the items in the job post.

Cover letters must have correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Remember, you are creating a first impression, so make it a good one!
