In 1909, University of Illinois Professor of Education Dr. William Chandler Bagley and a group of four of his students, including Truman Lee Kelley and Thomas E. Musselman, founded the Illinois Education Club.

On March 8, 1911, that club became Kappa Delta Pi, chosen from the Greek words to represent knowledge, duty, and power. From its inception, Kappa Delta Pi has been synonymous with scholarship, innovation, and excellence in the field of education.
