From the Desk of Melissa Chrisman
With midterms complete and finals looming, stress is an inevitability. Keep your sanity by engaging in positive self-care. Remember to maintain a healthy diet, and don’t forget to exercise! Also consider mindfulness practices such as meditation, yoga, or even a peaceful walk in the park. We encourage chapters to plan social activities to help members “blow off some steam” and diminish anxiety. Self-care is absolutely critical in our profession, as it allows us to tackle the challenges of the classroom each day with a clear head and a positive attitude. Find stress-reducing activities and programs that your chapter can plan in our Social Programming Guide.
Baylor University
Chapter Highlight – Baylor University
The Beta Xi Chapter at Baylor University does a great job of recognizing and treating their KDP members. Each month, the chapter leadership chooses a highly involved member to spotlight on their social media channels. This individual also receives a treat package with supplies, KDP materials, and goodies! How does your chapter recognize outstanding members?
Could a Scholarship Help You?
It’s never too early to start writing your essays and gathering the required collateral materials for KDP scholarships, which are available for multiple student levels—including undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral—as well as student teachers and practicing educators. Active members can submit online applications from Feb. 1 to May 1. Recipients will be announced July 1. Click here for a complete listing and individual scholarship requirements.

Literacy Alive
Literacy Alive!
Literacy Alive! is undergoing some changes as we explore new ways to create a positive impact in the lives of children. Next year, we will be focusing on program expansion and community partnerships. Begin discussing how your chapter’s Literacy Alive! project will address these two areas in the future. Our main goal is to move chapters toward ongoing programming that supports schools and children on a regular basis. In the next awards cycle, special consideration will be given to chapters that engage in this programming. For more details, see our Literacy Alive! update. More information will be coming in the December edition of The Leader, so stay tuned!
