Board Spotlight: Ms. Jessica Martz

For Jessica Martz, KDP represents recognition, connection, and purpose. “KDP means so much to me because it was the first time I truly felt recognized for my academic achievements in higher education,” she shares.

After silently struggling with undiagnosed ADHD during her undergraduate years, being invited to join KDP during her master’s program was more than an honor—it was a moment of validation and encouragement that reminded her she belonged in the field of education.

Through KDP, Jessica found a community of educators who inspire and support one another to grow professionally and personally. “KDP connects me to a network of hearts and minds dedicated to growth,” she says. “It’s a community that celebrates excellence, compassion, and innovation in education.”

The Power of One Great Teacher

Jessica teaches 10th grade English in Pennsylvania where she works to spark curiosity and confidence in her students. Her journey to teaching began with one transformative teacher who reignited her love for reading and writing.

“My eighth-grade ELA teacher reminded me how powerful one great teacher can be,” Jessica recalls. “After a rough year with a discouraging teacher, she made me fall in love with learning again—and I wanted to be that kind of difference for someone else.”

Now in her fourth year of teaching, Jessica channels that same compassion and encouragement into every lesson. She knows that in a rural classroom, teaching often extends beyond textbooks. “I never expected that I’d be Googling things like ‘calf pulling’ or how to identify deer tracks just to keep up with student conversations,” she laughs. “But that’s part of the beauty of teaching—it’s unpredictable, full of connection, and always evolving.”

From Chapter Member to National Board

Jessica’s journey with KDP has come full circle. What began as an invitation during graduate school has grown into a meaningful leadership path. Over the past seven years, she has served as Vice President, Secretary, and Social Media Coordinator for the Alpha Epsilon Sigma Chapter and now continues her service as a Director-at-Large on the KDP National Board.
Serving on the Board allows Jessica to give back to the community that once affirmed her potential. “Being part of KDP’s National Board gives me the opportunity to support new and aspiring teachers and to help shape the future of this incredible organization,” she says. “It’s about investing in educators who will go on to change lives—just as KDP once invested in me.”

Jessica earned her bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education from The Pennsylvania State University and two master’s degrees—one in Teaching English Language Learners and another in Curriculum and Instruction—from Western Governors University.

Meeting Students Where They Are

For Jessica, teaching—and leading—comes down to belief. Belief in students, in educators, and in the transformative power of connection. “Teaching life isn’t always predictable,” she says, “but it’s those unexpected moments that remind me why I chose this path—to meet students where they are, help them see what they’re capable of, and make learning meaningful in their world.”
