Dr. Andrew Hargreaves is the Thomas More Brennan Chair in the Lynch School of Education at Boston College, where his teaching and research focus mainly on leadership, professional learning communities, and educational change.

Hargreaves consults extensively with governments across the world in regard to education. In 2016, he was selected to serve on Scotland’s new International Council of Education Advisers, for which he advises on the government’s priorities for education and develops action plans. Prior to this appointment, he was co-founder and co-director of the International Centre for Educational Change at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. Hargreaves also serves as an adviser in education to the Premier of Ontario. He is President Elect of the International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement.

A founding editor of two scholarly journals, Hargreaves also has authored or edited more than 30 books, several of which have achieved outstanding writing awards from the American Educational Research Association, the American Libraries Association, and the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. One of these, Professional Capital: Transforming Teaching in Every School (with Michael Fullan, 2012), received the Grawemeyer Award in Education for 2015. His book Change Wars was named Book of the Year in 2009 by the National Staff Development Council.

Among his many honors, Hargreaves received the Horace Mann League Outstanding Friend of Public Education Award in 2016. Also in 2016, he was ranked by Education Week as the #10 scholar with the most influence in public education policy debate. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Uppsala in Sweden in 2010 and has held numerous visiting professorships around the world.

Hargreaves was invited to the Laureate Chapter in 2003.
