Theta Beta Chapter

Hofstra University

Hofstra University’s Theta Beta Chapter has taken revitalization to a whole new level. After becoming inactive in 2021, the chapter returned in spring 2025 with a determined group of students and faculty ready to rebuild. In approximately one year, it grew to about 60 active members and reestablished itself as a visible, welcoming, and highly involved campus community.

The chapter created the systems needed to make that growth last, including a constitution, shared digital resources, regular communication, biweekly meetings, and leadership positions focused on recruitment, public relations, philanthropy, and university standards. Three initiation ceremonies welcomed new members, while a “big and little” mentoring program helped students develop friendships and professional connections across initiation classes.

Members brought their energy to professional development, philanthropy, campus life, and community service. An alumni panel connected 31 students with local school principals, while a meeting with the incoming School of Education dean gave members a voice in their educational experience. A collaborative spelling bee raised $290 for an educational foundation, and the chapter’s first Greek Week team finished in first place. Members also supported Relay for Life, assisted local residents through seasonal service projects, assembled self-care kits for teachers, and joined a variety of campus initiatives. Hofstra’s comeback shows that when students combine organization, enthusiasm, and a genuine sense of belonging, they can build a chapter that feels both brand-new and built to last.

Marian University

Alpha Alpha Tau Chapter

Marian University

Marian University’s KDP chapter knows how to turn a rebuilding season into a success story. Just four years ago, the chapter had fewer than 10 members, several unfilled officer positions, and no active advisor. Today, membership has tripled, leadership roles are clearly defined, and the chapter has built a strong partnership with Marian’s educator college.

That growth came from being intentional. Officers promoted KDP across campus, visited classes, added a social media chair, and designed flexible programs that fit students’ busy schedules. Their social media content now receives as many as 6,000 views, helping more future educators discover the chapter and its community. Members also gained practical support through a Praxis information session, explored the long-term value of KDP during a panel featuring alumni and chapter leaders, and connected through a creative callout event and scavenger hunt.

The chapter’s impact reaches well beyond its meetings. Members volunteered at the Donut Dash in support of public education, participated in career preparation activities, organized book drives, and created connections among underclassmen, upperclassmen, alumni, faculty, and the Indianapolis community. With thoughtful succession planning and future leaders already learning alongside current officers, Marian University has built more than a stronger chapter. It has created a community ready to keep rising.

Epsilon Sigma Chapter

SUNY Oneonta

Talk about a comeback! After years of inactivity, the Epsilon Sigma Chapter at SUNY Oneonta made an extraordinary return, transforming from a chapter in need of a restart into a thriving community of more than 80 future educators.

Originally chartered in 1944 and declared inactive in 2018, Epsilon Sigma completed the requirements to reactivate in fall 2025. When the chapter hosted its first official meeting of the spring semester, 59 students attended, and 50 went on to become members. Less than a month later, the chapter celebrated the initiation of 84 new members, including its executive board and co-advisors, during a personalized ceremony attended by family, friends, faculty, and university leaders.

The chapter’s leaders built more than an impressive membership roster. They created an inclusive community where childhood and secondary education students could connect, collaborate, and have fun together. Monthly meetings blended professional support with creative activities, from exploring KDP scholarships while making St. Patrick’s Day crafts to designing teacher folders for resumes, field experience forms, and student-teaching materials. A collaboration with two other campus education organizations brought 52 future educators together to discover new opportunities and build connections across programs.

Epsilon Sigma also put its enthusiasm into action. A campus bake sale raised more than $200, and a member-powered popcorn fundraiser generated $4,705 in total sales. Half of the popcorn proceeds supported future chapter activities, while the other half benefited the Double Good Kids Foundation. Members are also developing tutoring opportunities for students in local school districts and building connections with alumni, graduate students, and fellow educators beyond campus.

From zero momentum to more than 80 members, Epsilon Sigma’s story is what the Phoenix Award is all about. With joyful meetings, ambitious leaders, and a community that makes every future teacher feel welcome, this chapter did not simply return. It came back ready to soar.

University of Maryland

Iota Upsilon Chapter

University of Maryland

The University of Maryland’s KDP chapter transformed challenge into opportunity. Previously operating with limited leadership, online-only meetings, declining membership, and no service programming, the chapter rebuilt itself around three guiding ideas: service, community, and opportunity. The result was an energized, inclusive chapter with stronger relationships and a renewed sense of purpose.

Through partnerships with university departments, faculty, alumni, and campus organizations, the chapter expanded from four active members at the end of spring 2025 to 17 by the end of spring 2026. Rolling initiations helped qualified students become involved sooner, while flexible attendance options supported graduate students, seniors, and members completing full-time school placements. Officers also strengthened communication, fundraising, advocacy, and member engagement, creating a foundation designed for lasting success.

The chapter’s programming put that new energy to work. Members explored literacy, diversity, and classroom advocacy with the founder of Classroom for Change. They organized a professional clothing drive that circulated approximately 200 items among education students and nonprofit organizations serving teens in foster care. Members also brought student perspectives to the College Senate and dean, created bookmarks for a local elementary school, and celebrated KDP history through a spirited Founders Day trivia social. Maryland’s chapter demonstrates what can happen when future educators listen to their community, advocate for one another, and lead with service.

Tau Epsilon Chapter

University of Michigan

The University of Michigan’s KDP chapter made an unforgettable return. After being inactive since 2021, five students came together with a shared question: Why shouldn’t future educators have a thriving professional community of their own? They found KDP, restarted the chapter, and transformed that idea into a growing organization where educators can connect, lead, and belong.

Starting with only the five-member board, the chapter experimented with recruitment strategies and learned what worked best. Classroom presentations, personal invitations, social media, and enthusiastic word-of-mouth helped bring in nearly 20 members during January alone. The chapter also made its social events more creative and community-focused, introducing activities such as educator “speed dating,” a March Madness watch party, and an arts and crafts event. By the end of the year, more than 20 members were attending each social gathering.

The chapter paired that community spirit with serious impact. An administrator panel brought together 41 attendees for networking and professional development. Skelementary welcomed 88 children and family members for Halloween-themed learning activities, reviving a beloved pre-pandemic tradition. A Red Cross blood drive filled every available donor appointment, while 20 KDP volunteer openings were claimed within a day. With leadership guides already being developed and plans for member committees underway, Michigan’s chapter did not simply restart. It built a joyful, service-minded community with the momentum to keep growing.

2025 Phoenix Award for Outstanding Chapter Growth Recipients

Kappa Nu Chapter

Ashland University
Phoenix Award

At the start of the year, Ashland University’s Kappa Nu Chapter was running on empty with just six members. Fast forward a few months, and the chapter is thriving with 20 active students, a packed calendar of events, and major recognition across campus.

Members built momentum with creative events like a Valentine’s “Bracelets, Hugs & Kisses” fundraiser and a popcorn-bar recruitment night that drew in future teachers. They teamed up with Aspiring Educators to run a holiday service project that collected donations and sent handwritten notes to military families—an effort that won Ashland University’s 2025 Service Project of the Year. They also reached 500 kids with a balloon-powered car race at a STEAM day and surprised every single teacher in the district with a gift bag for Teacher Appreciation Week.

What started as a struggling chapter turned into a student-powered movement that brought energy, service, and celebration back to campus. Kappa Nu showed how quickly a chapter can rise when students lead with heart and creativity, making them a standout Phoenix Award winner.

WV State

Alpha Phi Chapter

Auburn University
Rising Star Award

In just their first year, Auburn University’s Alpha Phi Chapter hit the ground running with energy and purpose. They built a close community by starting meetings with fun activities like KDP Bingo and personal nameplate painting, making it easy for members from different majors and class years to connect. They also made sure everyone knew how to take advantage of KDP benefits, from study resources like 240 Tutoring to national opportunities for growth.

The chapter quickly made an impact on campus and in local schools. Their Care Closet Drive brought in clothing, toiletries, and supplies for a partner school, and members even organized the donation space to make it more useful for staff and students. On the professional side, the POWERFUL Teaching series gave preservice teachers hands-on support with the Science of Reading, helping them feel more confident about teaching literacy—especially for multilingual learners and students from underrepresented backgrounds.

Looking ahead, Alpha Phi Chapter is dreaming bigger. They plan to expand the Care Closet project to more schools and add more social events so members can connect even more. They’ve already shown what a strong, supportive KDP chapter can do in just one year—and they’re just getting started.

Chi Beta Chapter

Chapman University
Chapter Renewal and Growth

The Chi Beta Chapter at Chapman University is living proof that a small spark can reignite into something powerful. Just a few years ago, the chapter was working to rebuild after losing momentum during the pandemic. This year, their leaders and members transformed Chi Beta into a thriving, welcoming community of 47 active members.

From hosting s’mores nights and bonding after meetings to diving into service projects like reading with kids at Higher Ground Orange County, Chi Beta found ways to make KDP feel like home. They launched a points system to encourage involvement, celebrated teaching with school supply baskets for local educators, and created space for every member to contribute in their own way. Faculty seminars, officer mentoring, and shout-outs on Instagram all added to the energy.

With new leadership positions, stronger connections to their college, and nearly all members returning next year, Chi Beta is soaring. Their story is about resilience, teamwork, and building a chapter where students support each other—and where the future of teaching feels bright.

Zeta Chapter

University of Cincinnati
Phoenix Award

The Zeta Chapter at the University of Cincinnati came back in a big way this year. What started with just five members turned into a packed room of 33 by spring. From handing out flyers and showing up at campus events to bringing friends along, their hustle paid off—26 new members joined in one year!

They didn’t just grow in numbers, though. Members jumped into service by teaming up with Crayons to Computers Cincinnati, collecting more than 300 school supplies for local teachers and kids. Their spring initiation was a highlight, welcoming 16 new members with crafts, laughter, and plenty of time to connect.

And the best part? They’re building something that lasts. Leaders set up a shared resource drive, created small check-in groups for members, and are even planning to bring alumni back for mentoring panels. The energy, creativity, and teamwork in Zeta Chapter make it clear why they earned the Phoenix Award.

Eta Tau Chapter

Lynchburg University

The Eta Tau Chapter at the University of Lynchburg has risen from the ashes like a true phoenix! In just one academic year, this once-dormant chapter transformed into a vibrant hub of activity for future educators.

Under the leadership of new faculty advisors and an energetic student officer board, Eta Tau went from having only 5 members to boasting 22 active participants. They didn’t just grow in numbers—they erupted with enthusiasm and innovation!

The chapter launched a full rebrand, complete with custom t-shirts and a social media presence that keeps members connected and engaged. They’ve taken over the College of Education’s TV screens with “Meet Your Officer” spotlights and enthusiastically shared the KDP message in classrooms across campus.

But it’s not all about looking good—Eta Tau is doing good too! They’ve embraced fundraising with creative flair, from supporting a major literacy event with renowned author Jan Brett to selling handmade jewelry at a local rodeo. These efforts raised over $600 to support local schools and students in need.

The chapter is also focusing on professional development, hosting events like “Sips with Student Teachers” to help ease anxieties about entering the field. They’re not just preparing teachers; they’re building a community of educators ready to make a difference.

With plans to adopt a local elementary school, expand their reach across campus, and continue growing their impactful programs, Eta Tau is setting the bar high for what a KDP chapter can achieve. They’ve proven that with passion, creativity, and teamwork, any chapter can rise to new heights!

WV State

Lambda Zeta Chapter

West Virginia State University

Talk about a comeback story! The Lambda Zeta Chapter at West Virginia State University has truly embodied the spirit of the Phoenix, rising from near extinction to become a vibrant, student-centered powerhouse in just one semester.

Facing a “permanent hiatus” in early 2024, this determined group of future educators refused to let their chapter fade away. With fresh leadership and a renewed sense of purpose, Lambda Zeta members rolled up their sleeves and got to work. They modernized operations, created interactive meetings, and launched creative initiatives like their annual chapter periodical.

The results? Membership skyrocketed, engagement soared, and the chapter’s impact on campus multiplied. From hosting a wildly successful hot dog fundraiser (complete with mouthwatering Appalachian-style slaw dogs!) to supporting their local community at the Salvation Army, Lambda Zeta proved that when passionate students come together, anything is possible.

Some key highlights of their transformation:

  • Membership grew from just 3 active members to over 20 in one semester.
  • Launched new committees to give every member a sense of purpose.
  • Created a Google Classroom to enhance communication and collaboration.
  • Established an annual publication to connect with alumni and celebrate chapter history.
  • Partnered with local schools to bring STEM education to middle schoolers.

The Lambda Zeta chapter’s journey shows that with dedication, teamwork, and a little creativity, any KDP chapter can reinvent itself and make a lasting impact on campus and beyond. Way to go, Lambda Zeta—you’re an inspiration to KDP chapters everywhere!
