Good afternoon, everyone. I hope this message finds you well.
I've seen these messages circulating for several months now and wasn't quite sure how to respond-until now.
My name is Renita L. Simmons, and I am an Alternative Education Teacher serving two schools in the northern suburbs. I work with a unique and often misunderstood group of students-those whom some may consider "difficult" but who, in reality, often just need patience, understanding, and a bit of TLC.
Regardless of the challenges they face-whether at home, in their communities, or within themselves-I am committed to helping these students stay on track, earn their credits, and move towards graduation. My role is not just about academics; it's about connection, encouragement, and never giving up on any student.
In addition to my teaching role, I'm currently finishing my Ph.D. in Educational Leadership. This year has been especially exciting, as students at both of my schools launched Black Student Union (BSU) chapters for the first time. I serve as the Advisor at the school where I start my day each morning and assist with BSU at the school I end my day at.
Right now, I'm definitely burning the candle at both ends-but I'm proud of the impact being made. And like many of us, I'm also very much looking forward to summer break!
