We’re excited to spotlight Lori Glavan, Communications Officer for the Omicron Pi Chapter at UNC-Charlotte. Lori found her calling in teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic when she saw students struggling with virtual learning. Now, she’s on a mission to build a classroom where every student feels known, loved, and celebrated.

Q: How has your KDP community helped you thrive in the classroom?

A: My KDP community has helped me to thrive in the classroom by leaning on the support network consisting of other future teachers. We are in the same boat, entering teaching milestones on a similar timeline to provide advice for one another.

Q: What inspires you to teach?

A: I discerned my calling to be a teacher the most clearly during the COVID pandemic. During this time, I watched K-5 students struggle to find motivation to learn as learning went virtual. This has catalyzed a major shift in education, reframing the role of teachers to serve as life coaches along with sharing academic knowledge. I strive to create a classroom community in which students feel truly known, truly loved, and truly celebrated.

Q: Outside the classroom, what hobbies or interests do you enjoy?

A: Outside of the classroom, I enjoy distance running, painting, reading, Bible studies, and traveling to new places!
