For Ms. Hannah Colwell, teaching isn’t just about lesson plans or standards. It’s about people.

A graduate of Western Governors University and a KDP member of the Alpha Epsilon Sigma Chapter, Ms. Colwell is currently pursuing her master’s degree while continuing to grow as an educator. She says KDP has played an important role in that journey. “KDP connects you with experienced teachers and university faculty who can offer invaluable advice on classroom management, curriculum development, and navigating school politics,” she explains. Just as meaningful, she adds, is the sense of community. “The community provides a network of peers who are facing similar challenges,” creating space to share successes, ask questions, and learn from one another.

Her desire to teach began long before college. “My inspiration is rooted in my own experiences as an elementary student,” she says. She was shaped by both exceptional teachers and the challenges of less effective ones. Those early experiences clarified the kind of educator she wanted to become.

“I want to pay forward the positive, formative influence that my best teachers had on me,” Ms. Colwell shares, “ensuring my students feel that same sense of guidance and support.”

She believes the classroom is often the first-place children discover who they are. “For many children, the classroom is the first place they truly learn to be themselves,” she reflects. Her goal is clear: “I am inspired to be the teacher who not only facilitates learning but actively fosters an environment where students have the security and freedom to explore, question, and grow without fear of judgment.”

When she isn’t studying or working part-time as a barista, Ms. Colwell reads constantly, paints, draws, and spends time with her dog. Creativity and reflection are part of her everyday life and are qualities she hopes will shape the kind of classroom she creates.

For Ms. Hannah Colwell, teaching is not about perfection. It’s about being present, supportive, and intentional, and creating a space where students feel safe enough to grow.
