Meet Dr. Melissa Webb Earnest, a KDP legacy member, CARE Action Team member, and dedicated educator who has been part of the KDP community for 31 years.

Currently serving as an Adjunct Professor at the American College of Education, Dr. Webb Earnest shared her journey from a non-traditional student to a veteran educator, and why peer support matters now more than ever.

Finding a Lifeline as a Non-Traditional Student
Dr. Webb Earnest’s history with KDP began when she returned to school as a non-traditional student to earn her master’s degree and teaching certification at the same time.

"When I was introduced to the professional organization, I realized there were many peer and professional members who would be a huge resource for me," Dr. Webb Earnest says.

Beyond the networking, KDP’s publications provided immediate, practical value. "I discovered publications such as The Teacher Advocate, The Educational Forum, and the KDP Record. I referred to those publications multiple times, especially during my first year as a professional educator."

The impact of that early-career backing is exactly why she later volunteered for the KDP CARE Team. She recognized that having an outside network is crucial for survival in the classroom. "Having solid resources and support outside the district or school where teaching can be a lifesaver in many situations."

Learning to Row Together
As part of the CARE Team, Dr. Webb Earnest focuses on making sure new teachers know they aren't isolated.

"The KDP CARE Team matters as it is a resource of support and inspiration. I want fellow teachers, especially beginning ones, to not feel alone. As the saying goes, we are all in the same boat together, rowing toward the same goals. The issue is who paddles. Sometimes it has to be me, and at other times, someone else has to pick up the oar. This is how we collaborate and cooperate together to reach the shore of success."

What Keeps Her Going
After more than three decades, her core inspiration hasn't changed: it’s always about the students. Whether she is teaching middle school, high school, or higher education, helping them break through barriers is what makes the job worth it.

"As many educators know, there is always one more difficult student," she notes. "They may struggle with the content or behavior or time management or a number of other barriers to learning. Helping them meet their potential, learning the material, and being successful in showing that knowledge gained is so worth all the minutes and hours spent. That is what truly keeps me going, along with peer support as I need it."

Balance and Creative Outlets
Because she teaches through the summer, Dr. Webb Earnest’s daily schedule stays fairly consistent year-round, but she makes sure to build in time to unplug.

Outside of teaching, she focuses on creative hobbies like counted cross-stitch, diamond painting, and playing her favorite music on the piano. She also prioritizes family time with her husband, their two dogs, and her grandson who lives in a neighboring state.

Even with a busy schedule, Dr. Webb Earnest remains committed to her own professional growth. Lately, she has been actively researching and experimenting with artificial intelligence (AI) to see how it can be utilized in education.

Thank you, Dr. Webb Earnest, for your 31 years of membership, your work on the CARE Action Team, and your continued dedication to the profession!
