For Ms. Sherena Thomas, education is about far more than just helping students' complete assignments—it is about shaping their confidence and fostering a lifelong love for learning.
As a current Learning Lab Assistant at Helena Park Elementary, Sherena balances her daily work in the classroom with her studies at Grand Canyon University. For her, joining Kappa Delta Pi has been a transformative experience that provides both the framework and the community to help her thrive as a future educator.
"Having a supportive community like KDP has given me both confidence and motivation," Sherena shares. "It reminds me that I am not alone on this journey."
Bringing KDP Values into the Classroom
Sherena’s commitment to professionalism, leadership, and continuous learning is evident in her daily work. She notes that her connection to KDP has pushed her to be more patient, intentional, and reflective—qualities that shine brightest during her small-group instruction with elementary students.
Watching a student finally grasp a concept they have struggled with, or seeing their self-belief grow, is what fuels her passion. "Those small moments remind me why teaching truly matters," she says. Her ultimate goal as a future educator is to build a safe, supportive environment where every child feels valued, capable, and prepared for life beyond academics.
Grounded in Family and Growth
Outside of her classroom and university commitments, Sherena finds balance and inspiration through her family. Spending time together and supporting her daughter’s school life and activities keeps her grounded and deeply connected to her passion for education.
To constantly refine her skills, Sherena spends her free time reading children’s books and educational materials to gather fresh, creative ideas for hands-on classroom activities. She also prioritizes quiet moments of reflection to stay organized and mentally prepared for the week ahead—a practice that ensures she can show up fully for her students.
